In that spirit, we’re sharing the details of a few new home entertainment releases for collectors who are still into that kind of thing.

Review copies were provided by Universal, Well Go USA and Warner Bros. This collector’s edition is for two sets of people: horror nuts with completionist collecting tendencies, and people who are really into writer/director Curry Barker. The special features are very focused on the filmmaker so, if Gen Z YouTuber guys are your thing, this is for you.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

An ultra silly but deeply joyful IP movie with a starry voice cast, this follow-up to the surprisingly great Super Mario Bros Movie doesn’t hit quite as hard but don’t we all just want Jack Black to be happy at the end of the day?

Hamnet

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

This one you should definitely buy. It’ll win at least one Oscar (probably for Jessie Buckley) and is generally just a well-produced, notable film. It wasn’t actually my favourite for a few reasons (Shakespeare films are always a tricky sell for me) but if you’re any sort of collector who is going to have a responsible representation of the 2025 year in film, you’ve got to have Hamnet. Special features are technically present (a few featurettes and a director’s commentary that could use the help of a couple actors) but completely skippable.

Song Sung Blue

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

One of my very favourite movies of the year, this feel-good-meets-tear-jerker gem features an all-time great Kate Hudson performance, an irresistible soundtrack, and a breakout role for one-to-watch Ella Anderson. The special features on the collector’s edition are fair but not spectacular but this is an ownable movie either way so you should definitely buy it.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Unleashed Edition Blu-ray

This, on the other hand, is another collectors-only kind of buy. It’s not for me but you’re either into this franchise or you’re not. Enthusiasts of the video game series (or, I guess, if you really liked the first movie?) will be happy to know the special features on this release are pretty solid but it’s of little interest to the general public.

Wicked: For Good

Blu-ray Theatrical Version + Sing-along

Ok, so here’s the thing- I have a lot of problems with this movie. It’s deeply flawed from conception straight through and I could spill thousands of words nitpicking (this is specific to part two; part one is imperfect but much closer to actually “good”). I love Wicked, like a stupid amount, so all the ways John M. Chu messed up what will be remembered as the definitive version will always bother me (pretty much all of my problems are a him problem). But, at the end of the day, you gotta own Wicked for home entertainment. You just gotta. This disc has a decent slew of special features (way too much Chu but whatever) and a singalong version for the psychos who don’t already know every word/actually want to sing the new songs. While my advice on Part One is an “absolutely buy this, if only to rewatch ‘Dancing Through Life’ anytime you want”, my buy rec for Part Two is more tepid and completionist but it definitely stands.

Black Phone 2

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD

This creepy horror sequel is a worthy addition to any collection if the genre’s your bag. It’s got some fun Canadian casting surprises if you’re a local theatre nerd and the always stellar Ethan Hawke at the film’s centre. Having been sent both, I’d say go for the simple Blu-ray rather than springing for the more expensive 4K because the bonus features are the same on both editions.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

It’s really the end this time, or it certainly feels like it. Despite the gaping hole left by the dearly departed dowager, The Grand Finale is a fitting end to the unexpected smash hit/totally irresistible saga of the Crawley family. This collector’s edition (with generous special features!) falls squarely in the “must-have if you’re in, ignorable if you’re out” category. I’m very much in.

Him

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

When it comes to a standalone movie home entertainment release, I usually limit my recommendation to “only buy it if you’ve already seen it and definitely want to watch it multiple times in the future”. The one exception is when the special features are interesting enough unto themselves to be worth putting on your shelf. Such is the case with this horror film that I have no interest in actually returning to but which has some genuinely great bonus content on the collector’s edition release. An audio commentary is mandatory for any good special features menu but this also has deleted scenes and a bunch of great featurettes that cover things not already covered by hundreds of featurettes before these, including the actors’ training regimen, and a look into the score (I love to talk about scores, composers are always so interesting).

Jurassic World Rebirth

Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

Though pricey, the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray is the way to go if you’re looking to own this shaky reboot-of-sorts on home video. I personally don’t see much value in the actual films in this franchise beyond the iconic original but I do love a behind-the-scenes featurette on how these movies get made and this collector’s edition is full of interesting material in that vein. Completists obviously need to buy A version of this film so, take the pressure off the movie itself, get the one with the movie magic.

The White Lotus: The Complete Third Season

DVD

Three seasons in, I’m still trying to get over my Mike White Survivor trauma to be able to enjoy this show even half as much as everybody else. Every season is theoretically a whole new thing but season three is really a whole new thing after the series-defining death at the end of season 2 (RIP, icon). As always, the production values here are luxurious and the ensemble cast is rock solid (I know most people are into Leslie Bibb for the bonus Rockwell content but my Popular-loving heart is always thrilled to see her in her own right) but I never really get the tone of this show. Kudos for the slight-but-present special features that most releases of hit shows like this just don’t even bother with.

Dune: Prophecy: The Complete First Season

4K UHD/Blu-ray/DVD

I personally don’t really get the Dune thing and 6 episodes is rarely enough to make me shell out for an HBO-priced box set but the production value and performances on this show are inarguably strong and the release does surprisingly throw in a few special features so, if Dune is your thing, by all means you should grab this one.

Abbott Elementary: The Complete Third Season

DVD

The best show currently on network TV obviously deserves a spot on your physical media shelf. The strike-shortened third season was a little odd with Janine working off-campus at the district so it’s not the series’ best but the season finale is superb and, even without any special features (for shame!), the DVD’s worth your time and money.

Shameless: The Complete Series

DVD

100% I am a definitely yes on this box set, regardless of the price (the press release from Warner Bros. didn’t list one but I’m seeing it online for anywhere from $90-140, all of which is well under what I’d be willing to pay for it). The set does have some special features but this isn’t a bells and whistles complete series release, this is a bare bones set with ugly packaging that just plain gets the full 11 seasons of Shameless onto your DVD shelf. Tonally, it feels kind of appropriate. Shameless is one of my favourite shows of all time and not nearly enough people watched it or talked about it or gave it awards when it was on the air (for the record, we did). Now that you’re all super into Jeremy Allen White, I’m hoping that’s all gonna change. Of course, staying with the characters for a full decade of their lives and watching the kids grow up in real time was such a central part of the show experience that it absolutely cannot be replicated by binge watching, so I really recommend taking your time with this one. Watch one episode a week if you can. It’s best as a long-term project. But, however you watch it, Shameless is a show worth investing in.

The Wayans Bros: the Complete Series

DVD

A 90s staple, The Wayans Bros was a classic albeit very silly sitcom I used to catch all the time on the now defunct WB. The series is finally now available in full on DVD and, while definitely not a must-have, it’s a fun addition to the collection for any fans of the Scary Movie franchise (or White Chicks I guess, if there are any big fans of White Chicks out there).

The West Wing: The Complete Series

Blu-ray

This is my favourite TV show so, even though I already have the world’s most perfect box set in the form of the original DVD version with its file folder setup (annoying to fit on the shelf, delightful in all other ways), and even though this set doesn’t have any new features other than the slight upgrade in technical quality, it’s one I had to have. It would have been really nice to at least have the special reunion live performance from 2020 as a bonus but there’s probably some sort of rights explanation as to why there’s nothing new here. Please enjoy the not at all pointed separation of the series into two blocks (seasons 1-4 and 5-7). I’m not a technical girl so, if the blu-ray-ness means nothing to you and you’re not a superfan, you can skip this one in favour of the DVD collection. But I certainly am not in a position to blame you if you feel you need to own both.

Veep: The Complete Series

Blu-ray

A brutal but appropriate companion piece to the box set above, Veep is brilliant at times, funny most of the time, and deeply deeply depressing. Again, no new bonus content for this collection but the previously released seasons are (with an exception or two) very generous with audio commentary, the best type of special feature, and all of those are collected here so this is a must-have if you currently own no Veep but if you already have most of Veep, maybe just stick with the season releases rather than doubling down.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Series

DVD

I personally really dislike this show but I guess if the straight white millennial men in your life need a Christmas gift, this is an ok choice. As far as I can tell, there aren’t any new special features that aren’t previously released though so only pick this up if you don’t already have the single-season versions.

The Gilded Age: The Complete Second Season

DVD

This somewhat vapid, glittering period drama features some fabulous grande dame acting. Is the 8-episode second season totally necessary to own on DVD? Probably not. But 20 pieces of bonus content sweeten the deal, ranging from the mundane to the fascinating, especially when the very intellectually engaged stars of the show (particularly Cynthia Nixon) chime in.

Twisters

Blu-ray

This movie was a fun trifle (could’ve used more Helent Hunt but so could everything) but I think it’s actually a much better home entertainment purchase than it seems. Though obviously the full tornado effects are best experienced in a proper movie theatre, if you’re interested in movie making at all, the behind the scenes is super cool and this release is pretty generous with the special features, even with the plain DVD version (only one feature is 4K/Blu-ray/Digital exclusive, it’s a cool one but at least you still get all the others).

Despicable Me 4

Blu-ray

I don’t know, you’re either on this train or your not at this point. If your kids are super into the minion-verse (first of all, I’m so sorry), grab this release for them and see if the moderate special features and two extra mini-movies can break up how many times you have to watch this four-quel on repeat. If they’re not into it, do not encourage them to get into it. This series is decently made but seemingly invented to annoy parents.

Vikings: Valhalla– The Complete First Season

Blu-ray

The follow-up series to Vikings brings the narrative into an era you’re far more likely to remember from elementary school but makes it a lot more fun. There are actually three seasons (the series is already finished) but this is their first home entertainment release so, even though you can totally watch it for free on Netflix (assuming you still have Netflix), I actually think you should spend the money to buy this release if only to encourage Warner Bros. to send more streaming shows to disc. The amount of media that’s going to be lost when these streaming sites eventually die out because they were never released for home entertainment is a tragedy I’m pre-mourning so let’s do what we can to fight that. If you haven’t already, start with Valhalla I guess?

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray

I don’t actually like the original Ghostbusters films very much (don’t yell at me) so I’m quite enjoying this new era. That said, I oddly think you should only invest in this sequel on disc if you’re a full franchise collector. It’s not that special a movie so, though the special features on the top of the line release are pretty cool, it’s only really worth the price if you’re a completionist who’s been on the Ghostbusters train the whole time (but if you tell me you’re a completionist but don’t have the one with the lady busters, I’m never talking to you again. It was fine; get over it).

The Fall Guy

Blu-ray

I quite liked this action-rom-com ode to stunt work despite its underwhelming reception and my general disinterest in Ryan Gosling (I said don’t yell at me!). I’m not much of a believer in extended cuts (all hail the almighty editor!) so that’s not a selling point for me but the other special features on this disc are very cool and I actually think it’s a pretty re-watchable movie. It’s not for everyone but this is a disc I’m glad to have in my collection.

Tarot

Blu-ray

A fun horror flick with decent special features, this disc is a fun addition to any genre collection. It’s not my chosen genre but you know if it’s yours.

Kung Fu Panda 4

Blu-ray + DVD

The Kung Fu Panda movies are quintessential DreamWorks- well made, tons of fun, somewhat vacant, still worthy of your time. A fourquel, on the other hand, that’s really only something you should invest in if you or your little ones are franchise devotees looking to complete an already started set. This is a fun movie for one-time viewing or essential to own for thousand-time viewing if you’ve got one of those kids, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for anything in between. The special features do slap though, if that’s a tie breaker for you. Jack Black learning to make dumplings? Delightful.

Madame Web

Blu-ray

Hear me out- this movie is not as bad as the internet says it is. I honestly kind of enjoyed it. That’s probably an expectations-based reaction because it’s definitely not good, but it’s definitely not the worst thing ever. Like, at least it’s more fun than The Eternals (saying nothing). I hate the casting pretty much across the board and Dakota Johnson’s I’m-too-cool-to-try brand is completely at odds with the chatty vibe of the screenplay (I love chatty; this movie is well near charming when Adam Scott is just being chatty). Also the story is nuts, but all superhero stories are nuts, I don’t quite see why everyone’s so fixated on how nuts this particular nuts thing is. The special features on the Blu-ray disc are slightly lame (easter eggs for anyone who didn’t manage to spot the Spiderman stuff on their own) but at least they’re there. IDK, this movie is very silly but it does the most important thing that I want from a genre movie- it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The Book of Clarence

Blu-ray

There are some missteps with tone and pacing in the first act of this strangely overlooked epic, a few bad ideas you can tell the filmmakers were too excited about to cut, but LaKeith Stanfield’s central performance is (as his performances always are) so captivating that you should have enough to hold onto to get safely into the second act when the story picks up and the gimmicks fade away. A bit overwritten but admirably ambitious, this surprising and earnest film deserved more attention than it got. I’d say this one’s a good purchase even if the Blu-ray didn’t have a slew of top-shelf special features (which it does; I wouldn’t say the insights are that brilliant but I’m just impressed they bothered to do a commentary AND a making-of when most people do neither these days). I, like most people, missed this in theatres so I’m happy it’s made it to home release.

Trolls Band Together: Sing-Along Edition

Blu-ray + DVD

The sing-along edition is the only way to go with this sweet and colourful confection. A handful of bonus features sweeten the deal (always more please!) but if you’ve got kids there’s nothing better than something to sing along to that’s actually watchable for adults and the trolls are great fun.

Wednesday: Season 1

Blu-ray

Shows made for streamers don’t make it to home release often enough so it’s thrilling to see Netflix smash Wednesday hit the shelves with a $29.98 Blu-ray edition. A bit more effort to add special features would have been appreciated especially considering the style of the show and the history of the source material but Wednesday is still a key entry from a substantial media franchise that should be a part of your collection.

Rick and Morty: Season 7

Blu-ray

We’ve been over this, if you’re in you’re in on Rick and Morty at this point and you need to buy this set (though I will say that Warner Bros is pretty consistent with these releases so waiting for a box set might not be the worst strategy). Season seven is the first without Justin Roiland but I assure you you will not be able to hear the difference and now you can enjoy this fantastic show without thinking about him at all; what a gift. The Blu-ray is priced at $34.99 in Canada which isn’t terrible considering how generous it is with special features but I still might recommend the jump down to DVD for $10 less.

Migration

Blu-ray + DVD

Excellent bonus features including both additional content AND behind-the-scenes content elevate the home release of the latest kids adventure from Illumination (the Despicable Me people). I personally couldn’t stomach this one on account of the birds (I hate birds) but normal people should find it delightful so if your collection has a kids section, go for it.

Babylon 5: The Complete Series

Blu-ray

$120 feels steep for any home release these days, especially with no special features (why?? This show is perfect for retrospectives on story, effects, style, and cultural impact!), but I love a complete series and this seminal sci-fi show is essential if that’s your collection niche.

Barbenheimer

Blu-ray + Digital/Blu-ray + DVD

Warner Brothers & Universal have released the Blu-ray discs of the contrasting hits of the summer (sold separately, obviously, they actually have nothing to do with each other). Barbie is the bigger must-have because it’s both more iconic and simply a better film but a collector should probably invest in Oppenheimer as well, especially if you have a robust biopics section or are a Nolan person (I’m not but to each their own). Both sets have decent special features.

Air

Blu-ray

This vapid drama about the origin of Nike’s Michael Jordan collab is beneath the taste and ability of its usually dependable director Ben Affleck (he’s got the most fun role onscreen at least, but that’s not saying much). Zero special features push this dud over the line as do not buy. If you must have it, at least do it the honour of inclusion in the Chris Messina section I know you’re building on your shelf; he deserves it and is the only interesting thing about this movie.

Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas

DVD

This cheesy but sweet holiday movie musical set behind the scenes at a holiday TV special is heartwarming but silly. Stacked with guest stars and with a making-of to sweeten the deal, the DVD is still a little too pricey for what it is at $25CAD but feel-good Christmas movies rarely get a home video release so if they’re your jam I won’t begrudge you investing in this one.

Mercy Road

Blu-ray

I personally am not a huge fan of Blu-ray over DVD unless it has extra special features (this doesn’t), especially when the price jump is a full 50% (from $20 to $30CAD) but if you’re an action fan this pulpy title from Well Go USA is an interesting twist on the Taken formula.

Crocodile Island

DVD

This one comes down to taste. Personally, the so-bad-it’s-good thing doesn’t appeal so I’d give the $20 movie-only disc a pass but if you’re a fan of campy Chinese cinema with wild ADR and giant predators, go for it.

Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6

Blu-ray

I’m always torn about recommending a physical media purchase with a really high price point ($120 for this one) but if you’re a dedicated DVD collector, I really think this is one you should have. Not only is the set rich with special features (a Dan Harmon specialty) but the episodes themselves have a ton of rewatch value. I wouldn’t normally suggest buying a complete set before a series is done airing but the firing of creator Justin Roiland marks a clear break between seasons 6 and 7 and there’s no saying how long the show will run from here (it’s renewed at least through season 10) so I say go for it.

Succession: The Complete Series

DVD

Ok, don’t yell at me, but I probably wouldn’t buy this set. If you’ve already got the other seasons, go ahead about pay your $30 for season four. But if you’ve somehow not seen Succession, even though this complete series isn’t too badly priced at $80, I’m gonna be contrarian and say meh. I mostly feel confident in this take because there’s so much noise on the other side so I’m unlikely to persuade someone who is actually all that interested, but to those of you who aren’t really interested but are feeling the pressure because your friends keeping using inherently stupid phrases like “best show ever”- I’m here for you. There is no such thing as a Best Show Ever and, if there were, your friend who only watches like 3 shows and they’re all on HBO is not in a position to correctly identify it for you. Succession is fine, it’s good, it’s whatever. I hereby let you off the hook.

Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar

Blu-ray + Digital Code*

If you live in the venn diagram of metal heads + animation fans, this feature is for you despite the astounding $40 price point for the Blu-ray (*and the digital code doesn’t even work in Canada!). The band from the adult swim series is back for a new adventure with some big name voice actors and memorable music. If this is your thing, have at it; it’s not mine.

Babylon 5: The Road Home

4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Code*

Another animated movie spun off from a TV show and available at a crazy price ($45 for the 4K combo, again no digital code for Canada), I’m a little bit more behind this one on. The set has stronger special features (including an audio commentary, the gold standard special feature) but it’s also more likely to be a collectible based on the following of the original series.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Power-Up Edition on Blu-ray + DVD

One of 2023’s great cinematic delights was also one of its great surprises. I did not expect this video game adaptation to be nearly as thoughtful, sharp, heartfelt, and genuinely funny as it was. But the movie is a thrill, packed with easter eggs for fans but earning every joke and building an engaging story worth seeing even if you weren’t raised on the franchise. The soundtrack is killer and the vocal performances (especially Jack Black as Bowser) are A+. The film artfully navigates expected pitfalls both small (like Mario’s weird fake Italian voice) and large (damsel in distress syndrome) and is generally a joy. This release is priced a little high, as most Blu-rays are these days, but it’s a worthy movie for the collection and comes with some fun special features (plus one stupid one where Anya Taylor Joy teaches leadership skills?).

The Venture Bros.

Complete Series on DVD

AND

Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart movie on Blu-ray

Venture Bros. is a seminal piece of adult animation content and its 82-episode box set ($122.99 CAD) would be a worthy addition to any animation collection. The special features on this set are great but they are all previously available so only invest in this set if you don’t already own any of the other Venture Bros releases or you’ll be getting some redundancies. The film is less of a vital collector’s piece than the show and is priced at a whopping $39.99 so the bang for your buck is definitely with the DVD complete series release rather than the Blu-ray movie (note the digital code that comes with the Blu-ray does not work for Canada, which stinks but is unfortunately not uncommon).

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin

The Complete First Season on DVD

Pretty Little Liars is a fascinatingly overlooked franchise that just keeps keeping on even if no one’s ever paying it any attention. Each show in the PLL interconnected (but not THAT interconnected) universe tells a different story in a different town and, most interestingly, exists in a slightly different genre context. Original Sin (which has annoyingly been retitled “Summer School” for the upcoming second season, seemingly abandoning intergenerational trauma as a key theme) plays in the world of classic horror as a new set of untrustworthy hotties deal with the franchise’s signature melange of secrets and torment and cute boys (the DVD release sports just two special features and one of them is all about them boys ;)). At $29.98, it’s a fair deal for the 10-episode first season if you’re a PLL fan.

A Man Called Otto

Blu-ray + Digital

This by-the-book feel-good adaptation is replacement level Tom Hanks and the home release isn’t much more necessary with its so-so making-of featurette and deleted scenes.
